Cymbeline

Dir. Matthew Radford Davies & Doreen Bechtol, Blackfriars Playhouse, 2025

“In Christensen’s earnest performance, the earlier Imogen was indomitable and complex. Wide-eyed and hopeful, her speeches of love and effervescent movement were driven by a sincerity that seemed to propel her across the stage, her emotional investment in her lover, her father, even her stepmother a source of energy for her. But importantly, her sincerity was not naivety; this Imogen was a savvy courtier. In her first encounter with Iachimo, Imogen at first extended grace and patience while listening to her visitor, before beginning to erect walls as Iachimo’s conversation turned to slander of Posthumus, and finally she pulled away firmly from his physical advances. Christensen gave a masterclass in passive aggression as Iachimo backed down and pretended he was merely testing her; her voice was ice and her gestures rigid as she coldly wished him to his rest, and the flatness of her “O no, no” in response to Iachimo’s “I must aboard tomorrow” was hilarious. But this passive aggression yielded to full rage in the face of Trusty’s Cloten, Christensen unleashing all the power of her voice as she rejected him to his face; here, the relief came from courtly politeness finally giving way as she said what she really felt.”
